One thing our TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winner does not have going for it is a crack marketing team. Listed on the Sears site simply as the Craftsman Garage Door Opener 3/4 hp Chain Drive, Keyless Entry, this unit may not immediately stand out to those unschooled in garage door opener reviews, but as you get to know this product we think you’ll be impressed. After all, actions speak louder than a fancy title.
Also, the words in this product’s name absolutely help define its capabilities. For starters, pay attention to the phrase “3/4 hp.” That much horsepower is still pretty rare among garage door openers. It will come in handy for even heavy doors in a hurry.
Less noise is one improvement you have every right to expect if you are updating from an older garage door opener, and this Craftsman model delivers. Even though it is powerful and features a chain in its main mechanism, this garage door opener has a spotless reputation for quiet operation. The chain-assembly openers have a bad reputation in general – and not just for lots of noise – but there is something to be said for having a rugged chain as part of your system. As mentioned, this one is well known for quiet operation and dependability.
This garage door opener is compatible with HomeLink, which means you can program the controls in your vehicle to open the garage door, turn on a light inside your house and more. You won’t need anything beyond what comes with this garage door opener to integrate it with your other HomeLink system components.
This opener can handle basically any door you would find in a residential setting, including a heavier, double-wide wood door.
This Craftsman garage door opener gets high marks for both safety and security. Its rolling code system means burglars cannot swipe your code because this system sends a different one every time.
Another security feature is the locking mode. If you ever lose track of one of your remotes for any reason it is best not to leave them functional. In the wrong hands your remotes offer easy access to your garage at least and perhaps your whole house if you are casual in your locking habits. The locking feature disables the remotes completely for as much time as you need to find them or to replace them. You can still have control over your door through the keyless entry number pads, which are much more difficult for criminals to utilize for access than remotes.
The automatic light sensor may take a little getting used to, but it provides its own layer of security by making sure you never enter a dark garage. Once it senses a person in the garage the light comes on instantly. You can easily program the light to turn itself off at a range of different time intervals. We like that the lighting system is a full 200 watts, enough to really illuminate a space. Garage door openers of the past sometimes offered such a pitifully small amount of light. In order to be of any use, especially in terms of security, garage door openers need to offer a significant lighting system.
This garage door opener will automatically stop if anything breaks an infrared safety beam that will be projected along the bottom of the door opening. The added safety of this feature extends beyond day-to-day use and into the realm of installation. You cannot even get this garage door opener to move until the safety sensor components are in place and functional. This keeps the installer safe. When the infrared beam system is fully functional it will allow the installer to finish working and will eventually keep everyone safe around the door. Kids and pets are especially at risk because they may be less aware of a garage door in motion above them.
This garage door opener offers ease-of-use features such as a keyless entry pad so you are never completely locked out, regardless of how many remotes you lose. We like that this system comes with two remotes. Most people would order a second if it were not included so starting with two adds to ease of use. A lighted wall console means never having to search for the button by the door.
We include installation when we consider ease of use and this opener has a reputation for being easy to install. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. It is a shame the rails come in multiple pieces, though. That will add unnecessarily to assembly time and to the potential for noise as this garage door opener ages and everything gets loose. One-piece rails will always be sturdier and easier to install.
Any time we see the word “lifetime” in a garage door opener’s warranty policy it catches our attention. This Craftsman can offer you just that for at least the motor portion of the garage door opener. The strong warranty is a good sign that this is an excellent product. Sears would not offer that guarantee if they thought many owners would need to use it. The warranty on parts is not quite as impressive but we felt pretty comfortable with five years. The majority of garage door openers in our lineup did not offer even that long for parts. A period of one to three years was more common.
Sears is really easy to get on the phone and we like that. We found them to be the least knowledgeable about their products, though, and the least willing to help us find answers to our questions.
This garage door opener is impressive in almost every way. The addition of a battery backup power system and single-piece rails would make this garage door opener even more competitive than it is. However, we think you will love many features of the Craftsman Garage Door Opener 3/4 hp Chain Drive. The 3/4-horsepower strength will manipulate just about any door in a hurry, and we like that this unit is designed to overcome the bad reputation of chain systems with quiet operation.
The ¾ horsepower will work well even on heavy doors.
It doesn't have an alternate power source, but that remains an extremely rare feature.
This sturdy unit with a reputation for quiet operation will work well for any home.
